Yesterday at least 25 picnickers drown across Pakistan


KARACHI: At least 25 picnicker including children, out to enjoy Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, Saturday drowned while bathing/swimming in seawaters, rivers, lakes, and canals all around Pakistan. Rescuers have so far recovered the bodies of ten unfortunate bathers, while divers are searching for the bodies. In Karachi alone about six people were swallowed up by the choppy waters of Arabian Sea at a beachside picnic point in Bin Qasim Town. Earlier, there was no knowing as to why did they risk their lives by going into the deeper part of the ocean, however later, police revealed they were fishermen. The divers pulled out the bodies of all the six victims. There in Dera Ghazi Khan at least eight outgoing thrill-seekers who jumped in the waters of Indus River at various picnic areas around Taunsa Barrage failed to resurface. The rescuers are busy diving in search of the bodies. Sources said five of the drowned were close friends. In Khanewal, three picnicking children drowned in the deep waters of Indus River near Head Sidhnai. Their bodies were retrieved from the water and handed over to their families. The body of a youth was also retrieved from Cern River in Manhesra who drowned while swimming last evening. A minor was washed away in the floodwaters in Jaafrabad’s Kot Allah Dad area. His body was recovered by the rescuers. A girl, 8, drowned in Rice Canal, which flows through, Maherd’s Kolachi village. In Mianwali, Indus River claimed the lives of two young men, whereas in Pud Eidan a boy drowned in Nusrat Canal running through Kot Laloo.
