ISLAMABAD: A dramatic standoff continues in the capital where a man wielding automatic weapons has brought the city to a grinding halt. The situation began after the man opened fire with automatic weapons on Jinnah Avenue. No clear demands have been made except that he and his family be provided safe passage and that his family be provided protection. Earlier TV footage showed the man coming out of a black Toyota Carolla and firing shots in the air. The footage also showed a woman and two children in the car. The woman could be seen going back and forth between the vehicle and the police contingent present at the site. The woman told police that the man identified as Sikander was her husband and would only negotiate with a high-ranking police official. SSP operations, Dr Rizwan walked over to the individual and tried to talk him into laying down his weapons. However, the armed man was later seen in the TV footage returning to his car with his guns still in his hands. Police have surrounded the area and traffic has been blocked. This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.
